N201 final assignment
For the last assignment in this course, I want you to have fun designing anything you want using our discussion in class last week as your inspiration. If you were not there for discussion, use a chapter from the "Screen" book as the basis for your inspiration. Look for general themes from the reading/discussion such as the concept of time, quantity vs. quality, gaming vs. movies, can you really "target" an audience, etc...
Remember the basic concepts of design:
- intentionally constructed
- exists in a context larger than itself (influences and inspirtations)
- creates a "remembered image" for the viewer
- evokes an emotional response in the viewer
- communicates something
From your own thoughts and reactions to those really large ideas and definitions design something that is fun for you (and hopefully for other people to experience.) The definition of "fun" is up to you. The definition of anything is just that - anything. This project can literally be anything, so long as you design it - anything from another poster, to a sprite (large enough to actually see, please,) to a sculpture, to an audio work, to a well-designed database, etc... You do not need to worry about target audience, pleasing a client, pleasing a teacher, etc. Just have fun with design. Try to remember the elements and principles of design and incorporate them as you work, but overall, enjoy what you are doing.
We will share these with each other on the last day of class so make sure you have something to share. December 5th is the last time this class will meet - we will not meet during finals week and there will be no lab on the 5th. Lecture will be structured like it was for the critiques, only this time I will not critique unless you ask me to.
What to upload to Oncourse (a few options here - choose the best one for you):
- A very brief description of the idea behind the design. You can just upload that to the text box and all it needs to be is an indication of what your big theme was from the reading/discussion that inspired your design. You write as little or as much as you want. If you prefer to write and attach a Word document that is fine as well.
- Upload a small RGB JPG of the project to Oncourse.
- If it is a project that does not support JPG output then create a file small enough to submit via Oncourse, if possible. Save it in a format that can be viewed without proprietary software. (i.e. not a Photoshop Document file - PSD, but a JPG; not an After Effects Project file - AEP, but an MOV, etc...)
- If you cannot make the file small enough to upload to Oncourse write a note to that effect and submit it via Oncourse and give me a CD in class.
- If your project does not have an electronic component (such as a sculpture or a performance piece) if you can document at least a portion of the project with a digital camera and upload a small RGB JPG to Oncourse that is fine. If you cannot do that then please write a full description of the project and upload that to Oncourse.
