The
sculptures in this project are from a series of self-portrait
digital sculptures called 10 Iterations: Identity in the
Digital Age. With these sculptures, collectively called
Iteration
1 - Organic Replication,
I am exploring the concept of "self" in an interactive
sculptural context. An interesting dialogue emerges when I
give control of "me" over to the user through the
process of interactivity. The forms in this series are all
textured with the image of my eye, seen to the right.

It
is not necessary that the viewer recognize the meaning of
the texture to have a relevant experience with the sculptures.
They were designed to be engaging on many levels, including
just as "eye candy." But should the viewer care
to consider the pieces in their intended perspective an entirely
different experience emerges. There is as much depth to these
pieces as the viewer wants to recognize. This is the dialogue
to which I refer. By allowing the user to manipulate representations
of my own identity I am hoping to evoke thoughts of identity
on a larger scale, especially in our digital age. Who has
access to your identity? What exactly is your identity? How
private is your identity? What is the relationship between
identity and self?
I welcome dialogue on this topic at beth@spyroterra.com
- I would like to hear your thoughts.
